Andy Warhol “Giant” Size – a visual biography.
Happy New Year, everyone! To see in 2012 we’ve asked two of our colleagues for their highlight’s of last year and what they’re most looking forward to in 2012.
Michael Simpson, Head of Visual Arts and Engagement
The highlight of my year was the opening of our major summer exhibition, Warhol and the Diva, in July. A colleague and I visited the Collection in snowy Pittsburgh earlier in the year to view Andy Warhol’s fabulous portraits of the divas he loved and admired so much – from Marilyn to Liz Taylor. The opening of the exhibition on a sunny Salford evening was terrific; complete strangers told us how proud they were to see Warhol’s finest work on show at The Lowry. Following its huge success it is pleasing to welcome a new collection by Adolph Valette, the French artist who was inspired by the Impressionists and went on to teach our very own L.S. Lowry. In the Spring we are thrilled to be working with the extraordinary Annie Lennox… It’s going to be a great year!
Steve Cowton, Senior Theatres Programmer
The highlight of the year was One Man, Two Guvnors from The National Theatre which achieved 103% ticket capacity as even all standing room was taken. We had appearances by legends such as John Cleese, Glenn Campbell and Shaun The Sheep. While the most critically acclaimed production of the year was The Life and Death of Marina Abramovic, starring Willem Dafoe, the year ended with the ultimate accolade of The Royal Variety Performance! There is so much to look forward to in 2012 with some of the biggest names in comedy including Rhod Gilbert and Dara O’Briain, plus Derren Brown will return to bamboozle us once again. The most hotly anticipated show in 2012 will surely be Wonderful Town with Connie Fisher; a great musical produced by a unique collaboration between The Royal Exchange Theatre, The Halle Orchestra and The Lowry.
