Blog: What’s next for The Lowry & the Salford Young Carers Service?

This Christmas The Lowry launched it’s first ever Christmas appeal and we are thrilled to announce that the final total was £10,123.93. The money raised will enable C&E to start a new project that runs throughout 2012 with Salford Young Carers.

It was great to see so many members of the organisation getting involved. The project is set to start in February. Here is an update on what’s happened so far….

The Community and Education department have been working closely with Salford Young Carers service to identify a core group of young people who will take part in the initial stages of the project with The Lowry. These 8 young people have been identified due to the extreme levels of caring responsibility as ‘lone carers’, meaning that they have no other support from family or friends leaving them solely responsible for the care of another person at home.

As a core group, these young people will meet fortnightly on Wednesday evenings with Lynsey Merrick, the participation & learning manager from our C&E team and the staff from the Young Carers centre to start work on the creative project.

The aim of the project is to engage this group of young people in a creative process that gives them the opportunity to be creative, express themselves and have a voice on a local and national platform as young carers. The group is extremely passionate about raising awareness of issues related to young carers, so this project will aim to help them shout about it.

January 2012

The group came to The Lowry for the first time and had a backstage tour with our senior theatres programmer. They were also treated to a lovely meal in the Lowry restaurant of Burger & Chips………which they thoroughly enjoyed!

What’s next?

The group will continue to meet fortnightly with Lynsey to start to work towards their ideas for a performance that will take place in the Lowry Studio in October 2012. The product created by the group will also be shared at National conferences, Young Carers Festivals in order to show people on a local and National level what is important to these young people.

This could be a piece of theatre, a film, music or dance; at this moment we’re not sure. But we’ll keep you updated on our ideas as they progress………
