Blog: The Lowry & Salford Young Carers Service update

Last Christmas The Lowry launched it’s first ever Christmas appeal and we are thrilled to announce that the final total was £10,123.93. The money raised will enable C&E to start a new project that runs throughout 2012 with Salford Young Carers.

We had such fantastic support from staff within the organisation so we wanted to update you again on what’s happened so far….

The core group of Young Carers have continued to meet fortnightly working creatively on their project ideas with Lynsey Merrick, The Lowry’s Participation & Learning Manager and staff from the Young Carers centre.

The aim of the project is to engage this group of young people in a creative process that gives them the opportunity to be creative, express themselves and have a voice on a local and national platform as young carers. The group is extremely passionate about raising awareness of issues related to young carers, so this project will aim to help them shout about it.

What’s happened so far?

January 2012 | The group came to The Lowry for the first time and had a backstage tour with our senior theatres programmer. They were also treated to a lovely meal in the Lowry restaurant of Burger & Chips………which they thoroughly enjoyed!

April 2012 | The group of young carers have now been meeting fortnightly for 4 months and have decided that they would like to make a film that will be used in all Salford High Schools to raise awareness of issues relating to Young Carers and how it affects their education.

June 2012 | The Young Carers group interviewed for a film company to work on their film, and have also chosen a professional director.

What’s next?

The film will be shot over an intensive week in summer with a professional film crew, director and professional adult actors on location across Salford. We will then premiere the film in October at The Lowry to special guests, family and friends before the film is distributed through the Salford Young Carers Service to all Secondary Schools in Salford. There also might be a few special treats as well, so we’ll keep you updated!
