Masterclass: Making Theatre Without Words

Theatre Ad Infinitum

Mon 7 – Fri 11 April 2014
10am – 6pm

We are excited to offer early and mid-career artists the opportunity to undertake a week-long masterclass with our Associate Artists, Theatre Ad Infinitum, exploring making theatre without words.

Theatre Ad Infinitum are an international theatre ensemble whose previous productions Odyssey, The Big Smoke, Translunar Paradise and Ballad of the Burning Star have taken them around the world and to the forefront of critic’s ‘must-see’ lists. With more than 30 awards to their name and a host of five star reviews for each one of their shows, Theatre Ad Infinitum are one of the most exciting companies making work today.

Now for the first time ever, The Lowry and Theatre Ad Infinitum are joining together to offer early and mid-career artists the opportunity to dive headfirst into a week-long exploration of how the actor in an empty space can use the body to create character, spaces, emotions, poetry, and atmospheres, and ultimately tell stories – without words. Participants will search for a gestural language, explore mime, try to find comedy, tragedy, and poetics and much more, and look for a visual and non-verbal theatre style that excites and fires the imagination. The workshop will culminate in the creation of short devised performances that experiment with their newfound discoveries in a theatre without words.

This workshop is suitable for emerging and professional practitioners and is priced at £250 for five days. To apply for a place on the course, please send a CV and a photograph to
