The Lowry’s annual youth dance project with Dance Manchester, ‘Signatures’ took place at The Lowry On Sunday 9 March. Attracting groups across Greater Manchester, this year’s performances were inspired by the signature motif of 2Faced Dance Company who performed at The Lowry in October 2013.
2Faced Dance are an all-male company and one of the UK’s leading contemporary dance companies. They are a professional company touring the UK and abroad and run a community dance and education programme alongside this.
Each of the youth dance groups were taught key movements during a day-long workshop before having the opportunity to create a new work and adding their own music, costumes and set. There were 9 youth dance companies from across Greater Manchester, including Altrincham Grammar for Girls, Mahdlo Oldham, Derby High Dance Company and Salford’s very own Commotions Youth Dance Company.
The works presented reflected the range and scale of 2Faced Dance Company, with duet work and group work, jaw dropping lifts and tricks, explosive snippets of break dance, beautiful and melodic floor work, strong energy and commitment by performers, and a fresh and exciting display of skill and energy.
It was truly refreshing to see local young talented dancers take the work and style of professional dancers and make it their own. The region’s youth dance sector is growing in skill and reputation we are really looking forward to U- Dance at The Lowry on 22 and 23 March – the regional youth dance platform for the Northwest which leads to the National Platform in Nottingham in June.
