While the main goal I have firmly stuck to throughout my life has been to work as an actress (you can find me on Youtube in my first professional screen roll; ‘Fielder Throwing Ball’ in a rounders-themed cod liver oil advert – see all two seconds here: http://bit.ly/1mZqbAZ), I’m the type of person to get a little carried away and explore every opportunity available to me.
Having moved to Salford Quays from the Lake District just over a year ago, I am now completely immersed in the arts scene. So far I have worked for numerous venues and local theatre companies as a management assistant, in programming, marketing, publicity and social media, as an actress and, of course, as a Ticket Sales Assistant at The Lowry.
My involvement with this versatile and enthralling venue started soon after my arrival in the city, and I can regularly be found handling enquiries and booking tickets behind the front desk, or taking calls in our sales office.
I am also lucky enough to have been invited to join a team of young performers from the Salford area who will be taking to the Lowry stage from Wed 21 – Sat 24 May with the wonderful Opera della Luna (link to http://www.operadellaluna.org/ ) as a performer in their vibrant and fresh new production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Gondoliers. As is their usual approach, Opera della Lunawill be endowing the classic operetta with a new energy, and a few of their trademark surprises! Rich with a lush Italian-influenced score and zinging with typical Gilbertian political cynicism, it’s already looking like this production will take on the new life that the company joyously breathes into all its productions.
As a young actress and singer, this is most definitely an opportunity that I could not afford to miss, and was only made possible by Opera Della Luna’s generous decision to recruit a chorus of young singers from the local community, and The Lowry’s commitment to increasing participation in the arts for young people in Greater Manchester and beyond.
Watch this space for further updates from me about The Gondoliers – rehearsals are well underway and have been going string since the beginning of March.
