Just over 7 months ago many of you may remember reading the news that The Lowry had raised its highest ever target of £25,000 through its Christmas appeal to fund a year-long literacy project with young parents in Salford and 7 months on these young parents and their children have made fantastic progress.
Since we began the project at The Lowry, over 800 children and young people from Salford have taken part in creative activities including visits to The Lowry to see live theatre performance to storytelling workshops in local Sure Start Centre’s across the city.
Over this time young parents and their children, specifically in the Little Hulton and Pendleton areas of the city, have been working alongside professional writers, actors, musicians and illustrators to inspire their very own Children’s Story Book about their experiences of parenthood.
Over the next couple of months, the book will be published and sent to print before appearing as a professional publication, on sale in a local book shop near you. All funds raised by the sales of the book will continue to fund the project longer term.
The Lowry project, in partnership with Salford City Council, will also send a free copy of the book to all Salford Sure Start Centres and Libraries, to be used as a resource for local communities.
In September 2014 these young parents and their children will launch the book at The Lowry for an audience of family, friends and invited guests as they celebrate their fantastic achievements over the past year.
