The Lowry marks the Centenary of the First World War

Lancashire Hussars Image1Over the past few months, The Lowry has been busy preparing to mark the Centenary of the First World War with a day of special family activities. We’re really excited to have joined forces with Salford Museum & Art Gallery, Ordsall Hall, Salford University, Imperial War Museum North, the Museum of the Manchester Regiment, Tameside Cultural Services and Stockport Museums and a host of other organisations and agencies to put on a day of family activity which reflects upon the First World War on Wednesday 13th August. We’re particularly excited to be joined by 2 horses from the Lancashire Hussars!

Our young persons’ vocal project, SingItSalford, are currently working hard to write songs inspired by Salford Museum & Art Gallery’s ‘100 Years Ago: Salford At War’ exhibition which explores the First World War experience of a range of Salfordians.

These new songs will be premiered on the 13th of August as part of our Centenary family event. Following this, the group will have a master class with The National Theatre’s ‘Song Man’ from War Horse, Bob Fox. On the 31st of August they will perform their songs for the cast of War Horse at a special event.

We’re also working with young people from Contact Theatre and local actor/director/company manager Max Schuell from Yardstick Narrative. They will perform a short piece of devised theatre inspired by War Horse.

We’re delighted to be working with young people from Riverview Primary School, Friars Primary School and Lower Kersal Young People’s Group in partnership with The Broughton Trust. The group will attend the family event on the 13th and watch War Horse before working with a drama and visual artist over the course of a week to develop their response to War Horse which will be showcased to the cast at the end of August.

If you’d like to know more about SingItSalford and our work around War Horse, please contact or pop into The Lowry between 10am-3.30pm to join in our free centenary events and activities.
