#theLowryAtFringe Diary: Keepin’ it North

So we’re ten days in and I’ve been keepin’ it (largely) North by checking out a bit of a dream list of northern talent who are really impressing audiences and critics up here at Fringe.

HIT SHOWS FROM UP NORTH (or down south a bit, if you’re in Scotland)

* Chris Thorpe – Confirmation (Northern Stage, Newcastle)

Chris Thorpe’s new show about confirmation bias – a thought experiment in which Chris, a self proclaimed left-wing liberal spends some time with a far-right white supremacist holocaust-denier, attempting to understand the world from the opposite end of the political spectrum. Confirmation won a Fringe First Award in the very first week of the festival and has been acclaimed by critics and audiences alike.

* Britannia Waves The Rules (Royal Exchange, Manchester)

Bruntwood Prize-winning play Britannia Waves The Rules was a smash hit success when it premiered at The Royal Exchange earlier this year. It tells the story of Blackpool lad Carl who joins the army seeking travel, adventure and most of all, escape. The play has transferred beautifully to the pocket-size in-the-round space of Paines Plough’s brand new portable theatre, Roundabout.

* Prelude to a Number (Geddes Loom, Manchester)

Geddes Loom are a relatively new company and Prelude To A Number is their first show, commissioned by Routes North. Routes North is an initiative in partnership between ARC, Stockton; The Lowry and Theatre in the Mill, Bradford and offers an opportunity for one artist or company based in the North of England to make and tour a new piece of work. Prelude to a Number is a lyrical tribute to the magical qualities of the number Phi, or The Golden Ratio – featuring songs, stories beatboxing and live looping.

Eggs Collective 740 use

* Eggs Collective Get A Round (Manchester) FREE

Featuring Leonie of Geddes Loom, Eggs Collective are an all-female, shloer-fuelled firework show featuring three very sparkly (sparkling?) women armed with a list of rules for a Big Night Out, a soundtrack of solid gold party hits and a big blue bucket. ‘Get A Round is Eggs Collective’s first full-length show which some of you may have seen at The Royal Exchange “pre-lash” in July.

* Chewing The Fat (Selina Thompson, Leeds)

This one’s coming to The Lowry in the autumn and we’re so excited to have her! The general consensus of anyone coming out of Selina’s show is that they just want to be her friend/give her a cuddle. An incredibly warm and vibrant performer, Selina explores her relationship with food in a glittery midnight feast featuring doughnuts in the knickers and a whole roast chicken.
