We are so proud to have won the ‘Best Family Event’ award, for ‘Lego & Live Music’, at Get Creative Family Arts Festival Awards 2015 – and we definitely enjoyed our trip to London to receive it…
The awards ceremony, last week at the Albany in London, was packed with representatives from theatres and galleries to orchestras and dance companies, all with one thing in common – a commitment to bringing arts to life for families across the UK.
Family Arts Festival is a national campaign happening every October. These awards recognise outstanding achievements in delivering family arts activity over the three weeks of the festival.
Last year’s festival saw 4,000 family arts events delivered by over 800 organisers across the UK, so we were very proud to have been chosen for an award and delighted to be have been invited to a ceremony to toast the successes of lots of fabulous, family-friendly arts organisations.
Our ‘Best Family Event’ award was for our ‘Lego & Live Music’ event which we held at The Lowry as part of Family Arts Festival 2015. ‘Lego and Live Music’ combined the artistic talents of Master Model Builder Alex Bidolak from LEGOLAND Discovery Centre, Manchester (must be within the top ten best jobs in the world?!) and musicians from the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra – one of Europe’s finest orchestras.
So, how exactly did we put the famous building-blocks and beautiful classical music together? Well, most people are familiar with Lego so we used it as a ‘way in’ to classical music for families who may not usually listen to it. The orchestra began by telling a musical – story of The Gingerbread Man, encouraging families to interact and sing-a-long, and then it was over to Alex, who demonstrated how to build characters or scenes from the story with Lego.
Over 400 people enjoyed creating their own masterpieces inspired by classical music and got the chance to listen to world-class musicians talk about their craft – for free.
Bringing arts alive for families is something very close to our hearts at The Lowry. Our three theatres present scores of family shows every year – from drama and dance to musicals, and even opera aimed at younger audiences. All year round we welcome families to watch a show together, explore an art exhibition or share a meal in our restaurant.
We are already looking forward to co-ordinating the Salford and Trafford Family Arts Festival again this October – we are hoping for another award-winning fortnight of fabulous family fun!
