We spoke to Kati Yla-Hokkala from Gandini Juggling, ahead of them showcasing their mind-blowing circus skills in ‘Smashed’ at Dance:Sampled on Saturday 17th February at The Lowry!
1. How long have you been dancing? What made you start?
I started with ballet, because my family couldn’t afford piano lessons, when I was about 8 years old – but quickly moved away into Rhythmic Gymnastics. Then in my twenties I got very interested in a more contemporary way of moving, mainly release based dance. Lately, I have started to enjoy ballet again! Full circle!
2.What do you love about dancing and watching dance?
I love the idea of creating shapes, moving through space, to specific counts or without, on my own or with others. Life without dance would be boring!
3. What do you think the appeal of a showcase like Dance: Sampled is?
It’s wonderful for audiences to get a taster of different companies and different styles of dance. It is also a great pleasure to have been invited to perform in such illustrious company!
4. Who or what inspires you?
Inspiration can come from anywhere. Looking at people going about their business, other art forms, birds flying in beautiful formations, mathematical patterns. I am also fortunate to live with an inspirational husband!
5. What is your greatest achievement to date?
Still managing to share a stage with our younger and very talented performers!
