Born at Cambridge University, the brain child of Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss created while they were studying for their final exams. Who’d have thought the pop concert/musical that started out at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2017, would now be all over the world, from Broadway to West End, even as far as Australia, AND on sea!
The genius duos are now talked of being the potential predecessors to musical royalty such as Andrew Lloyd Webber! – yep, they’re just that good! Moss even became the youngest female Broadway director, another accolade to add to the pair’s awards and successes from the smash hit musical SIX.
But, why has the modern musical taken the world by storm? (apart from the fact its bloomin’ brilliant).
The show sees the six wives of Henry VIII fighting for the title of who was hardest done by while married to the King, and let’s be honest, none of them had easy lives, but in the end –no spoilers, promise – but we see them come together.
In a world that is filled with online trolls, keyboard warriors and self-doubt, not only does this feel good musical feature nine amazingly uplifting songs, but within the educational story (come on we definitely all learnt something about Henry VIII wives that we didn’t know before) there is a powerful message, a message that says –hang on, we’re all in this together, why fight, let’s fix each other’s crowns, we’re all queens , one of a kind, no category (you see what we did there…).
And who better to re-enforce this message than our beautiful Manchester Drag Queens. In December 2019 we invited the Family Gorgeous into our Quays Theatre for a video shoot like no other. Cheddar Gorgeous, Anna Phylactic, Banksie, Lil, Liquorice Black and Narcissa Nightshade took to the stage to welcome to SIX queens to Manchester.
Cheddar said: “We were lucky enough to catch the show at the premiere last week! I loved the way it delivered such an empowering message through a girl-band inspired score worthy of any pop diva. As any drag queen will tell you, you should never underestimate the power of a sequin and a catchy tune to get your point across, and this show really sparkles! Getting to meet the amazing cast has been the icing on the cake!”
Divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived. Our six Manchester queens took on the opening hit song Ex-Wives, hitting the stage with their fierce and powerful lip-sync rendition for the SIX touring Queens as they roared in celebration later joining them on stage. SIX will be back at The Lowry for six weeks this December. Six weeks of sass, girl power, and tunes that you won’t stop singing for days. There’s nnnnnn-no way, you want to miss it.
