20 years in the making

Kate RiceKate Rice, our wonderful Front of House manager celebrated 20 years of working in our beautiful building on Friday (20th March 2020). Kate began working for us 6 weeks before we even opened our doors to the public, as we approach our 20th Birthday, there are plenty of fond memories Kate can look back on to celebrate.

“From dancing with Anton Du’Beke in my office, to giving Adele advice on how to talk to an audience, to Sir Ian McKellan asking if I could hold the show so he could go to the toilet…there are just so many amazing memories!” Kate Says while reminiscing.

Kate manages the army of nearly 300 award winning volunteers, who greet and help our audiences every day. As well as this Kate is responsible for many other duties, she tells us more…

“A front of house manager basically looks after all the theatres” We have three theatres, so that’s a big job! Kate continues “We make sure audiences get in safely, make sure the shows start on time, we have programmes and merchandise for them, and have the cloak room ready, the entire operation relating to getting the audience into the theatre.”

We have thousands of people visiting our building each week, so you can imagine all the faces Kate has welcomed over her 20 years, and she does this each day with her warm smile and cheery personality.

Kate has always loved theatre and after studying at Drama school, she decided being on stage wasn’t for her, “I still wanted to be involved with theatre, and I’ve always loved working with people. I saw the job come up at The Lowry, I had some customer service and management experience, I just went for it and here I am!”

To end Kate gives some advice on getting a role in Front of House, “Just go for it! Get plenty of experience working in a theatre, ideally front of house, selling programmes, taking tickets, showing people to their seats, all of those are really important skills you need to learn. The most important thing is you need to be a good, smiley person!”
