In 2018, Chantal Joffe featured in The Lowry’s Week 53 Festival. Personal Feeling Is the Main Thing brought together a selection of her fearless paintings that confront the physicality of the human body and the complexities of human emotions. Her portraits of friends and family and her self-portraits during her pregnancy combined humour and intimacy and proved enormously popular.
Here Joffe talks about her approach to painting, and the thrill of being selected for the annual New Contemporaries exhibition when she was still a student. New Contemporaries have supported contemporary visual artists since 1949 and this short film was made as part of their 70th anniversary celebrations.
