“I have always depended on the kindness of strangers” – the real woman behind the myth

The Lowry has its very own connection with A Streetcar Named Desire. In 2012 we were delighted to win an Empty Space Peter Brook Award. As such we were visited by the head judge and theatre critic Blanche Marvin – a brilliant raconteur who is still around and loving theatre well into her nineties. Blanche revealed in 2014 that she was the inspiration for Blanche Dubois and that she even provided the most famous line in the play, “I have always depended on the kindness of strangers”,
