Nick Cave and The Bad Seed’s Murder Ballads inspired by A Streetcar Named Desire

National Theatre Live screens online A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE performed by Gillian Anderson, for one week only. Our Creative Team take a look at that infamous Tennessee Williams play and art it has inspired.

Blanche Dubois, played in this NT production by Gillian Anderson, has one of the most famous lines in theatre history. In the final scene, Blanche is led off to a hospital by a matron and a kind-hearted doctor. After a brief struggle, Blanche addresses the doctor with the line: ‘Whoever you are…I have always depended on the kindness of strangers’. It provided inspiration for one of Nick Cave and The Bad Seed’s Murder Ballads.
