In 2016 The Lowry came together with Sadlers Wells and Birmingham Hippodrome to form The Movement – a collaborative venture that saw us work together to programme a broad range of inspirational new dance at all scales.
Many people remember the visit by The National Ballet of China who presented The Peony Pavilion in The Lyric.
The Movement also commissioned choreographer Kate Prince to make a new full length performance based on the music of Sting and The Police.
Kate Prince is probably best know as the Director of Zoonation – the company who presented the joyous Some Like it Hip Hop last year.
Message In a Bottle is a brilliant narrative-based piece of dance about the experiences of refugees – it fuses hip-hop and street dance styles in a very innovative and accessible way.
Sting was involved throughout the rehearsal process and you’ll hear some familiar songs in a whole new way.
The finished show opened in London at the Peacock Theatre earlier this year and was due to be visiting us in May. Sadly that wasn’t able to happen – but we’re already talking to the Company about bringing the show in 2021.
Until then, BBC’s flagship Arts programme “Imagine” have made a special documentary following Kate as she worked on the show. Check out the trailer here.
The progamme can be seen on Thursday 30th July at 22.45 and will be available on the iPlayer afterwards.
