Jonathan Yeo…in lockdown

One of The Lowry’s most popular exhibitions in recent years was our survey of portraits by Jonathan Yeo, who has painted politicians, celebrities and royalty to great success – from Dennis Hopper and Lauren Laverne, to Idris Elba and Prince Philip.

He painted Mancunian actress and political activist Maxine Peake specially for the show.

Like many artists, Yeo has had to wrestle with the challenges of lockdown – especially difficult for an artist used to sitting in front of his subjects while he works.

Here he describes how he has developed his ‘FaceTime Portraits’ series, where sitters have been FaceTimed in their household, with Yeo in his studio.
